Hello Families,
Learning Update:
Last week we strengthened our understanding of numbers and focused on negative and positive integers. Students compared, ordered, and added integers, applied their understanding of absolute value to problem solving, have been using these strategies in out math warm ups. Today, we started Order of Operations! Everyone seemed excited to learn about this. We will be using PEMDAS as a nemonic device to help with the order.
In Science, Grade 6s continue to look at Sky Science. They have been exploring stars and are now working on a constellation research project. Grade 5s are working on their weather unit. They have been learning about the different types of clouds and the water cycle.
In Social Studies, both grades are working on a research assignments and are working with partners to develop a Google Slide presentation. Grade 6s are researching Athenian Democracy and comparing their social structure to Canada's. Grade 5s are exploring the physical regions of Canada and are developing an understanding of how geographical features effect the quality of life in that specific region.
We have stared working on Story Writing. We will be studying plot, character development, story structure, dialogue, and effective beginning. We have been reading anchor books to pull out story elements and examine haw different authors include them in their stories.
During health, we have been working on developing and maintaining health relationships. We have participated in two workshops the Impact and In Control with TelusWise that focused on cyberbullying. We learned how bullying impacts others and strategies to use if you're in a cyberbullying situation. In addition we look at social presents and the impacts that can have. It was extremely beneficial and was a wonderful tie in to our time at the Be Brave Hitman Game.
